Tibetan Medicine & the Treatment of COVID-19 in Himalayan Communities

With Dr. Tawni Tidwell and Menpa Phuntsog Wangmo

This week we welcome an esteemed colleague of ours, a Doctor of Tibetan Medicine and Cultural Anthropologist, Dr. Tawni Tidwell. Dr. Tidwell shares her recent Tibetan Medicine research project, in collaboration with ATMA, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota, and Dartmouth College. This study describes the management and treatment of Covid-19 on the Tibetan plateau. The Tibetan regions experienced remarkably few cases of COVID-19 in the early months of the pandemic. When Tibetan communities did eventually have significant outbreaks, local physicians had great success managing these cases, using an integration of biomedical and Tibetan Medicine. In fact, the Chinese Government’s chief coronavirus expert, Zhong Nanshan, launched an official clinical research trial into Tibetan Medicine’s efficacy in the treatment of the COVID-19 virus.

Dr. Tawni Tidwell

Dr. Tawni Tidwell is a Tibetan medical doctor and biocultural anthropologist, holding a PhD from Emory University. She is the first Westerner to have formally completed her Tibetan medical education in a Tibetan institution in Tibetan language.

Dr. Tidwell trained at Men-Tsee-Khang in north India and at the Sorig Loling Tibetan Medical College of Qinghai University in eastern Tibet; a comprehensive five-year medical program.

Dr. Tidwell’s work draws from contemporary neuroscience, Buddhist epistemology, and biocultural anthropology. She works to understand how Tibetan physicians embody their diagnostic practices, particularly in cancer and metabolic disorders.

Dr. Tidwell works with the Tibetan medicine understanding of physiologic, psychologic, pharmacologic, and ritual paradigms of transformation and traditional modes of healing.
