This week on the Shang Shung Institute School of Tibetan Medicine Webinar Series, we welcome a panel of special guests to discuss the relationship between chronic stress and cancer. Our guest Dr. Debu Tripathy will share his profound experience in oncology research, along with his special connection to Tibetan Medicine. Dr. Alejandro Chaoul will offer insights from his decades of work with integrative medicine, Tibetan studies, spiritual and yogic practices. Menpa Phuntsog Wangmo will present from the perspective of her vast experience in Traditional Tibetan Medicine. Join us to explore the relationship between our long-term mental-emotional state and the chronic disease, from the unique perspectives of these leading experts in Eastern and Western Medicine traditions.

Debu Tripathy, MD

Debu Tripathy, MD is Professor of Medicine and Chair, Department of Breast Medical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He received a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed medical school and an internal medicine residency at Duke University followed by a Hematology/Oncology fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco. His clinical research focuses on the evaluation and development of novel therapeutics in breast cancer, specifically, growth factor receptor pathway targeting as well as biomarkers that predict sensitivity and resistance. Dr. Tripathy is also part of a multi-disciplinary team of breast cancer specialists dedicated to patient-centered state-of-the-art and personalized approaches to care, with an emphasis on clinical trials that interface with the basic scientific strengths at MD Anderson and those of external collaborators. He has a longstanding interest in traditional medicine, integrative oncology and the study of botanicals and other complementary approaches for breast cancer. He has conducted early phaseclinical trials in the area of botanical medicine and Tibetan Medicine. Dr. Tripathy has published numerous original laboratory and clinical research articles in the area of breast cancer and serves on several editorial boards, study sections and societies as well as Editor-in-Chief of CURE Magazine. He has previously served as President of the American Society of Breast Diseaseand the Society of Integrative Oncology.

Alejandro Chaoul, PhD

Dr. Chaoul is the Huffington Foundation Endowed Director of the Mind Body Spirit Institute at the Jung Center of Houston, bringing a new approach for helping healthcare professionals flourish by reducing stress and burnout, and improving health, resilience and nourish the human spirit. He has 20 years of experience at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, as an assistant professor and Director of Education, Integrative Medicine Program, Department of Palliative, Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine. He is also an adjunct faculty member at The McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics, where he teaches medical students in the areas of spirituality, complementary and integrative medicine, and end of life care.

Dr. Chaoul has taught at Rice University, the University of Houston and the Jung Center of Houston. Since 1995, he has been teaching Tibetan meditation and Tibetan yogic practices under the auspices of the Ligmincha Institute. He is the author of Chod Practice in the Bon Tradition (SnowLion, 2009) and Tibetan Yoga for Health and Wellbeing (Hay House, 2018), and more. Dr. Chaoul has recently been recognized as a Fellow at the Mind & Life Institute.

Menpa Phuntsog Wangmo

Menpa Phuntsog Wangmo is a practitioner of Traditional Tibetan Medicine, with over 30 years of experience in clinical practice as well as teaching. She received her advanced degree from the Lhasa University School of Traditional Medicine. Menpa Wangmo is the Director of the Shang Shung Institute School of Tibetan Medicine. She teaches Tibetan Medicine around the world, developing programs and teaching students internationally. Menpa Phuntsog Wangmo is also the Co-Founder of the American Tibetan Medical Association, ATMA, Tibetan Medicine professional organization, providing resources for practitioners and supports of traditional Tibetan Medicine in the United States.

Benedetta Tagliabue

Benedetta Tagliabue (born 24 June 1963) is an Italian architect. She lives and works in Barcelona, Spain.
Tagliabue was born in Milan, Italy. In 1989 she graduated in Venice from the “Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia” in Italy.

Presently Benedetta Tagliabue teaches at the University of Architecture ETSAB (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona) in Barcelona and lectures regularly in architectural forums. In 2004 she received an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Napier University and she is a member of The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
